Frappés par la crise, des milliers de citadins gagnent les campagnes, espérant y trouver une vie plus agréable. Et moins chère.

Chaque soir, c’est le même rituel. Manolo Ejido va chercher dans son pré Ana, une belle vache à la robe marron, pour la traire. Il le fait manuellement pour sentir le contact avec l’animal. "J’ai l’impression de retrouver les gestes essentiels. Cela prend vingt-cinq minutes mais on obtient trois litres de lait par jour, ce n’est pas mal." À 52 ans, Manolo a fait le grand saut il y a six mois. Avant, il travaillait dans une entreprise de multimédia, qu’il avait fondée. "On faisait des pages Web pour l’administration publique, mais les autorités locales ne nous payaient plus. On n’a pas eu d’autre choix que de fermer boutique." Depuis, il vit dans ce coin d’Estrémadure, à deux heures de voiture de Madrid.

Rather than sitting on the runway, however, the aircraft, an aluminum model, was placed this week atop a giant statue along the entrance road to the airport — another twist in the tale of a $183 million project that has become a symbol of the wasteful spending that has sunk Spain deep into a recession and a banking crisis.

The statue, 79 feet tall and budgeted at $375,000, was supposed to honor Carlos Fabra, the longstanding head of Castellón’s provincial government and the driving force behind the airport project.

Mr. Fabra was placed under judicial investigation this year in connection with several cases of corruption and tax evasion. He has not been charged, however, and he is not expected to appear in court before the end of the year.
